Three Different Countries Take Top Three Pre-Worlds Spots, World Championship Begins Thursday

Båstad, SWEDEN (1 August 2012) – Just a day before the 2012 BMW Farr 30 World Championship, bright sun and a chilly Southerly 12-20 knot breeze set the stage for two exciting Pre-Worlds races yesterday.  Neophyte Farr 30 team Triple P (NED) took the surprise victory in the two-race series.  “We never would have expected it,” said pitman Ralph Van Etten.  “We’ve practiced hard for more than half a year, but before this past winter, most of us had never sailed on a Farr 30 before.”  Van Etten said his team thrived in the breezy conditions, thanks in part to a winter training program that included racing twice each month out of their home club in Scheveningen, The Netherlands.  “We saw a lot of wind back home, and we’d love to see a lot more for this World Championship.”

Long time class warrior Dr. Harold Bruening aboard Topas (GER) turned in a powerhouse performance, sailing away from the fleet for nearly the entire first race and scoring a 4th place in the second, and he says his crew is ready for action on Thursday.  “Most of this crew, including my son, have sailed together for more than 5 years now, and we feel as though we are ready for anything.”  Two of Bruening’s crew are new to his program, and he feels they add a winning touch to the team. “We’re glad to have German 49er sailor Julian Ramm to the team while Australian David Chapman has a great tactical mind,” said Bruening.

Jens Lekland’s Inglorious Basterds (SWE) took third place in the Pre-Worlds, tied on points with Bruening, and along with the 19 other racing teams, enjoyed a post-race barbecue dinner provided by Sailing Arabia – The Tour.  Full results for the Pre-Worlds can be found here.

Breeze and Sun On Tap For Race Day

Båstad city’s mayor, Anita Söderlind, was the special guest at the skipper’s reception on Wednesday evening, and she welcomed the dedicated sailors with open arms.  “I watched some of the crews preparing and launching their boats on Sunday, and I was amazed at the amount of work that goes into competing at a regatta of this calibre,” Söderlind said.  “As far as I am concerned,  every crew is already a winner.”

Unfortunately for most, there is only one winner, and they’ll be crowned the 2012 BMW Farr 30 World Champion in just four days, the first of which is showing a likely 12-18 knots of Southerly wind with sunny skies and warm temperatures.  Despite booming music emanating from local night clubs, most crews hit their beds early Wednesday night to bolster their performance at the biggest Farr 30 Worlds in years.    “It looks like Thursday should provide really perfect conditions for Farr 30 racing, and these sailors will be working extra hard all day,” said Event Co-Organizer Hans Ramne.

Fans of the Farr 30 can keep up with the latest action from Bastad via Facebook, Twitter, and the Worlds website, while every race will be available to watch live via the TracTrac tracking system.  The below links provide those addresses and more.

ABOUT THE 2012 BMW FARR 30 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

After a Class re-organization in 2009, the Farr 30 Class embarked on an aggressive plan of rebirth and growth of Class racing, resulting in strong growth of the Worlds fleet leading to the 2012 Championship.  Class racing continues to grow from Sweden to Southern California and the Arabian Peninsula to Turkey. Used boats in great condition are widely available, providing a surprisingly cost-effective alternative to more expensive 30-foot racers that provide a fraction of the fun and versatility of the Farr 30.  For more, check out www.farr30.org.

ABOUT THE FARR 30 CLASS
