Cal Race Week May 30th and 31st

California Yacht Club,

Marina Del Rey, CA

Marina Del Rey was the place to be racing a Farr 30 on Saturday during Cal Race Week!  The 1st day of the 2 day regatta brought unexpectedly blustery winds of 12-15 knots making for great conditions for these fast boats.  Competition was fierce and all fleet members stepped up to the challenge.  As usual within this fleet, the results were tight and exciting.

Sunday was anybody’s race and the conditions provided the perfect backdrop to test each crew’s skill with flat water and 5-9 knots of shifty wind.  Jim Murrell’s Huckleberry 2 with America’s Cup sailor Eric Doyle on board were able to keep their lead on the second day with Clockwork, Monica and Marc Skipwith’s boat in hot pursuit.

Our newest fleet members Steve and Mark Aichele made a strong debut on their boat Lunch Money holding their own with the fleet on Sunday.  We were excited to have them finally join us out on the water and look forward to seeing more of them in the coming months.

Congratulations again to Jim Murrell and his crew aboard Huckleberry 2!

Ahmanson Cup 2009 – Newport Harbor Yacht Club

April 18th and 19th, 2009

What a weekend of racing in Newport Beach, CA at Ahmanson Cup for the Farr 30 Southern California Fleet!

Day 1 tested all of the tacticians and sailors abilities with light and shifty wind conditions topping no more then 6 knots.  The race committee was able to get off 3 races for the F30 fleet with a tie for first place between Monica and Marc Skipwith’s “Clockwork” and Steve Brown and Rhonda Tolar’s “Wild Thing”.  However, the other boats were not far behind so going into Day 2 was any boats game and the F30 Fleet definitely stepped it up!

Day 2 could not have been better conditions for the F30 with winds topping out at around 18 knots.  The racing was fierce and in the first race there were three boats all finishing at the same time piling up at the pin end, it was One Design racing at it’s finest!  Steve Brown and Rhonda Tolar’s “Wild Thing” were on their game and finished the regatta with top honors.  Way to go “Wild Thing”!

Next up for the F30 So Cal Fleet, Cal Race Week at the California Yacht Club on May 30th and 31st where the newest owners to the fleet Steve and Mark Aichele will be joining us on the line, we look forward to an 8 boat fleet to add to the excitement of this fabulous fleet.

Farr 30 Southern California Fleet Season Kicks off with a light shifty SCYA Midwinter Regatta February 21 and 22

The Farr 30 So Cal Fleet kicked off the season with The Southern California Yachting Association’s 80th Midwinter Regatta this past weekend.

Only a year ago the Fleet was established with 5 boats active at this very regatta.  This year there are 8 active boats all in So Cal, and four made it out for Midwinters hosted by California Yacht Club.

The fleet activities began with a sail rebranding party on Thursday night, followed by an on the water seminar and chalk talk on Friday night with Nelson Stephenson, the International Class President.

Despite extremely light breezes consisting of 0-6 knots that proved challenging for tacticians as winds oscillated on both days.  The CYC race committee was able to get off 5 races for the Farr 30 Class.  Dick Schmidt and Dave Powers took top honors with 3 bullets, a difficult feat in the light conditions.

A big congratulations to Dick Schmidt, Dave Powers and the crew of Frequent Flier!

What’s next for the Farr 30 So Cal Fleet…?  Spring Keel Boat hosted by California Yacht Club, April 4th and 5th we hope to have a strong showing at this regatta!

Huckleberry 2 wins the Southern California Farr 30 Fleet 2008 Season Championship

Jim Murrell clinched the coveted Farr 30 half hull awarded on Friday, February 20th at a class awards ceremony at Tony P’s Restaurant in Marina Del Rey.  The trophy will be hung for the next year at Jim’s King Harbor Yacht Club.

From left to right:
Marc "Skip" Skipwith (fleet president), Nelson Stephenson (int'l class president) and Overall winner Jim Murrell

Competition was tight for the first year of the newly developed and rebranded Farr 30 Fleet with Jim besting the second place finisher Monica and Marc “Skip” Skipwith’s Clockwork by 1 point.  Murrell was consistently in the top ranks of the fleet and was named boat of the week at Long Beach Race Week in 2008.

Congratulations to Jim Murrell and his team of Huckleberry 2 for winning and we look forward to a great 2009 season of competitive racing and fleet growth.
